E-bike crash leads to impaired charge for local teen

A 19-year-old Midland resident allegedly involved in crashing his e-bike learned that drinking and driving laws apply to e-bike operators as well.

Shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday, Southern Georgian Bay OPP officers were dispatched to investigate after a single-vehicle, e-bike accident in a parking lot off Len Self Boulevard where the Midland recreation centre is located.

Neither the operator nor female passenger required hospital treatment as a result of the crash and the accused was released from custody at the completion of the investigation.

The young man was charged with impaired driving in connection with the incident.

 As well, his driver's licence was suspended for 90 days and the e-bike impounded for a week. He is slated to appear in court May 2.

Recently, patrol officers were able to set up six Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) programs at various roadway locations resulting in more than 60 drivers being checked for signs of impairment.
