6 new COVID cases in Innisfil today

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 83 new cases of COVID-19 today (Jan. 15), and four deaths. . 

The deaths reported by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit include a woman and a man from Barrie, a woman from Orillia and a woman from Collingwood. 

The death of the Collingwood resident reported today was a woman between 65 and 79 years old whose case was sporadic (not linked to an outbreak). She died on Jan. 1, but the health unit delayed reporting her death to confirm it was a COVID-related death. 

The Orillia woman was over 80 years old and her case was linked to an outbreak at Trillium Manor. She died on Jan. 13. 

The Barrie residents who died were both residents of Roberta Place (also in outbreak), including a woman between 65 and 79 years old (who died Jan. 13), and a man over 80 years old (who died Jan. 14).

The new cases reported today include 35 Barrie residents, one Clearview resident, one Wasaga Beach resident, 19 Bradford West Gwillimbury residents, six Innisfil residents, four Orillia residents, and two Midland residents.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 4,592 cases of COVID-19 with 3,295 of those cases recovered and 86 cases ending in death. There are more than 1,100 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region, with the majority of those in Simcoe County.

There are at least 36 people from Simcoe County hospitalized. 

According to the health unit, there have been more than 9,700 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine administered in Simcoe Muskoka to health care workers in local hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes. More than 420 individuals have received both doses of the vaccine.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include:

  • Wasaga Beach (1): A man between 35 and 44 years old
  • Clearview (1): A woman between 45 and 64 years old whose case is outbreak-related.
  • Barrie (35): A woman under 18, eight women and five men between 18 and 34 years old, four women and two between 35 and 44, nine women and two men between 45 and 64, one woman and two men between 65 and 79, and one woman over 80. Seventeen of the Barrie cases reported today are outbreak-related, two are close contacts and one case is linked to travel. 
  • Innisfil (6): Two men between 18 and 34 years old, two women and a man between 35 and 44, and a man between 45 and 64. One case is outbreak-related. 
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (19): Two girls and a boy under 18, three women and seven men between 18 and 34 years old, a woman and a man between 35 and 44 years old, three women between 45 and 64 years old, and a woman between 65 and 79 years old. Three cases are linked to close contact and three are outbreak-related.
  • Orillia (4): Two women between 18 and 34 years old, a woman between 35 and 44 years old, and a woman between 45 and 64 years old. One case is outbreak-related and two are linked to close contact. 
  • Ramara (2): A woman between 18 and 34 years old whose case is linked to close contact. This case was received by the health unit on Nov. 10, 2020, but had not been publicly reported prior to today. The other case reported today (new case) is a man between 65 and 79 years old whose case is outbreak-related.
  • Oro-Medonte (1): A woman between 35 and 44 years old whose case is outbreak-related.  
  • Midland (2): A man between 18 and 34 years old and a woman between 45 and 64 years old. 
  • Penetanguishene (1): A woman between 18 and 34 years old.  
  • New Tecumseth (6): A girl under 18, a man between 18 and 34 years old, a man between 35 and 44 years old, a man and a woman between 45 and 64 years old and a woman between 65 and 79 years old. one case is outbreak-related. 
  • In Muskoka, there are three new cases in Gravenhurst and one new case in Huntsville. 
  • One case is listed with location information pending.

  • Roberta Place (Long-term care home), Barrie, Jan. 8
  • Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (Integrated Stroke/Rehab Unit), Barrie, Jan. 9
  • Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care (Awenda A&B), Penetanguishene, Jan. 9
  • Waterford Retirement Community (phase 2), Barrie, Jan. 12
  • Bradford Valley Care Community (facility-wide), Bradford, Jan. 14

The provincial government requires an outbreak be declared at a retirement or long-term care home where one staff or resident tests positive. There does not have to be evidence of spread within the home for an outbreak to be declared. In most other cases, the health unit does not declare an outbreak unless there is evidence of transmission at the facility. 

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on Jan. 15.
