Number of new COVID-19 cases spikes to 805 in Ontario

Ten COVID-19-related deaths were reported over the past 24 hours; More than 44,000 tests were administered Friday

The number of positive, confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario continues to trend in the wrong direction.

Today, Public Health Ontario is reporting 805 new cases of COVID-19 in its daily update. Yesterday, there were 712 new cases, while 783 were reported on Wednesday. 

Due to an upload error that has since been corrected, today's numbers include cases from Toronto Public Health that should have been captured in yesterday's count.

The province is also reporting 10 more people have died from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. Five of those people were residents of long-term care homes in Ontario.

On Friday, 44,722 COVID tests were administered. Right now, there are 33,630 tests currently under investigation, awaiting results.

The hot spots in the province continue to see rising numbers. Today's report includes 374 cases from Toronto, 107 from Peel, 70 from Ottawa, and 93 from York Region.

Right now, 278 people are reported hospitalized in Ontario due to COVID-19. There are 72 COVID patients in intensive care units and 42 people are requiring the use of a ventilator to breathe. 

To date the province has confirmed 63,713 cases of COVID-19 in Ontario and has reported 54,686 (85 per cent) of those individuals have recovered while 3,041 (4.8 per cent) have died. 

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported a total of 1,108 cases of COVID-19, with 1,037 of those in Simcoe County. There are now 932 cases listed as recovered. There are 137 active cases in the region, and five people are currently hospitalized The health unit has recorded 43 deaths.

The incidence rate for Simcoe-Muskoka region is 186 cases per 100,000 people.
