Three new cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Simcoe County

More than half of the Simcoe County residents who have been hospitalized for COVID-19 have recovered

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is reporting three new lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 today.

Among them is a Barrie man in his 50s. His case is attributed to close contact. He is the 146th case confirmed out of Barrie.

A woman in her 30s from Ramara also tested positive, and her transmission source is also linked to close contact.

A man in his 40s from New Tecumseth was the third case reported today. His transmission source is under investigation.

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 443 total cases of COVID-19 in the region, 328 people have recovered, including 310 residents in Simcoe County. Thirty-five people from Simcoe County, and one resident from Muskoka have died from the coronavirus.

Three institutional outbreaks remain active, one at Owen Hill Care Community in Barrie, one at Collingwood Nursing Home, and one at Bayview Retirement Home in Waubaushene.

Since April, the health unit has reported the deaths of 23 long-term care residents, and 35 residents who tested positive for COVID-19 have now recovered. There are still 10 residents who are not recovered and two who remain hospitalized.

Twenty-six staff confirmed positive for COVID-19 have now recovered and nine staff are still considered active cases.

There have been 42 people hospitalized in the region with COVID-19 but were not in an intensive care unit. Twelve of those people have died and 23 have recovered. Eight people remain in hospital with COVID-19, including two in intensive care.

There have been nine people hospitalized in an intensive care unit, two of them have died and five have recovered.

Overall, the incidence of cases in Simcoe and Muskoka is highest in people aged 80 and over, with an infection rate for that age group of 189.4 per 100,000 people.

Locally, the fatality rate for those over 80 who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 is 36.8 per cent.

In those aged 65 to 79 years old in Simcoe and Muskoka, the infection rate is about 85 per 100,000 people, and the fatality rate is 15.6 per cent. However, this age group has the highest hospitalization rate, with 27.3 per cent of the people in that age group with COVID-19 being hospitalized.

The infection rate for most other age groups between 18 and 64 years old is about the same (between 78 and 81 per 100,000 people, with the hospitalization rate going down as the age decreases.

The breakdown of cases in each municipality, according to the health unit is as follows:

Barrie (146 cases, 102 recoveries, 14 deaths, 1 in hospital), Bradford West Gwillimbury (94 cases, 72 recoveries, 12 deaths, 2 in hospital), New Tecumseth (45 cases, 28 recoveries, 2 in hospital, one death), Orillia (17 cases, 13 recoveries, 2 deaths, one in hospital), Collingwood (15 cases, 11 recoveries), Wasaga Beach (13 cases, 10 recoveries, one death), Clearview (7 cases, 6 recoveries, one death), Innisfil (30 cases, 27 recoveries), Springwater (8 cases, 6 recoveries, 1 death), Midland (6 cases, all recovered), Oro-Medonte (5 cases, 2 recoveries, 2 deaths, 1 in hospital), Adjala-Tosorontio (7 cases, all recovered), Essa (10 cases, 7 recoveries, 1 death), Ramara (7 cases, 4 recoveries), Tiny (3 cases, 2 recoveries), Tay (5 cases, 2 recoveries, 1 in hospital), Penetanguishene (3 cases, 2 recoveries), and Severn (3 cases, all recovered) for a total of 422 cases in Simcoe County, including 306 recoveries and eight hospitalizations.

There are also 19 confirmed positive cases in Muskoka, and 17 have recovered, one person from Muskoka Lakes has died.

The case rate (including lab-confirmed cases only) for the Simcoe-Muskoka region is 73.6 cases per 100,000 population. The provincial average is 165.7 cases per 100,000 population.
