For the second day in a row, Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported zero new COVID-19 cases in the region.

The health unit has reported new cases nearly every day since March, and has not had two consecutive days without new cases since early March.

Yesterday, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Charles Gardner announced there are no institutional outbreaks currently active in the region "for the first time in many, many, many weeks."

Dr. Gardner also noted though the region experienced a resurgence of cases, that has now ended. He said the doubling rate (the amount of time it takes for cases in the region to double) is now nine months, which is the longest it's ever been. He also noted the reproductive rate of the virus shows fewer than one person is infected by every one case, meaning the spread in the region is trending downwards instead of plateauing or growing.

There is one outbreak at a food processing plant in Simcoe County where 16 workers have tested positive and 14 of them are residents in the region.

There are now 30 active cases of COVID-19 in Simcoe County and Muskoka District, according to the health unit's epidemiological report.

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 606 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region.

Thirty-six people have died and the health unit has reported 540 recoveries and 36 deaths. The incidence rate for Simcoe-Muskoka region is 102.1 cases per 100,000 people in the population.

The average incidence rate of infection for Ontario is 242.6 cases of COVID per 100,000 people in the population.
