11-year-old Isabella Palleschi from Bradford is one of 26 winners in the Kid Food Nation recipe contest

Eleven-year-old Isabella Palleschi of Bradford is one of 26 winners in the Kid Food Nation contest, with her Italian Chicken Burger and Garlic Broccoli recipe.

It was last March when Palleschi saw a commercial on TV inviting kids aged seven to 13 to submit their healthy recipe ideas for the annual nationwide contest.

"I love to cook with my mom, so asked her if I could join the competition because I love cooking," said Palleschi.

Coming from an Italian background, Palleschi's mother Angela says cooking is a large part of their culture, and Isabella has always taken an interest in helping out in the kitchen.

Palleschi worked hard to come up with a unique recipe for one of her favourite foods - Burgers!

"We had to think of something to do with a hamburger," laughed Angela.

"I love hamburgers and I'm Italian so I did the Italian chicken burger," said Palleschi.

For her recipe, she uses garlic bread for the bun, and instead of ketchup, she uses tomato sauce, with basil and mozzarella cheese on top.

It wasn't until June when Palleschi heard back from the contest organizers letting her know she was one of the winners.

All 26 winners from across the country had their recipes published in a cookbook, Kid Food Nation Volume 4 and received a free virtual cooking lesson with celebrity chef Lynn Crawford this past November, making a pumpkin macaroni and cheese.

"It was delicious," described Angela, "it was so good."

"I'm really happy and excited," said Isabella about her win. She hopes to continue creating in the kitchen, especially with all the extra downtime in lockdown.
