'Cousin power' making a difference in local communities

'The response was overwhelming'

Jennifer Koutoulas comes from a large family.

With 15 or so cousins, even before COVID-19 it was hard to keep in touch.

Then, when the pandemic hit and closures began, “some of us were laid off, some took a pay reduction,” Koutoulas said – and the cousins set up a group chat, “just to check in.”

A smaller group of nine of the cousins wanted to do more. Although some were facing tough times themselves, they wanted “to help others in even more difficult situations,” she said.

The result was Coffee4Frontline, which focused on providing real support for frontline workers and their families - not only those working in health care settings but “including grocery staff, and everyone who goes out every day to provide service,” Koutoulas said.

“The response was overwhelming.”

Coffee4Frontline quickly raised over $7,000, on Facebook and Instagram. “We were blown away,” she said. “Even in difficult times, people want to do something to help.”

The response has meant that the group has been able to not only deliver coffee and treats to frontline workers, but to reach out to assist local shelters and food banks, “as well as some families directly.”

Koutoulas, who lives in Alcona, Innisfil, is the “furthest north” of the cousins. Most live in the Toronto area; one in Bolton.

Personally, she has delivered contributions from the group to a number of local organizations – including coffee and treats to staff at Lakeside Retirement Residence and the Lefroy fire station; baby formula and gift cards to Innisfil Christmas 4 Kids (C4Kids) Year Round, for families in need; and now has connected with the Thornton Food Bank, to drop off gift cards.

Koutoulas herself was laid off at the end of March. Right now, she said, “I’m at home with my three children, trying to homeschool. And trying to find something positive to do.”

The whole Coffee4Frontline experience has been positive, she said. “It’s been so great,” uniting the cousins and making a difference in their communities across the GTA.

“This has really brought us together,” Koutoulas added, expressing the hope that the connections and the contributions begun during COVID-19 will continue.
