Fewer weekend GO trains running on Barrie line

Metrolinx say staff shortages will mean fewer weekend trains through Newmarket, Aurora

Newmarket transit users can expect fewer weekend GO trains on the Barrie line this month as Metrolinx has announced service changes due to staff shortages.

There likely will be some disruptions in its system starting Aug. 12 due to staff illnesses leaving a shortage of crews to operate trains. The company indicated schedule changes will last the next few weeks and will include the Barrie and Stouffville lines on weekends.

“We are hiring and training more staff to accommodate future increased services levels as more people get back to using transit,” the company said. “Metrolinx is working to minimize delays and impacts to people’s travel plans.”

The exact changes to the weekend schedules for the Barrie line were not immediately available, but a spokesperson said there would be fewer trains going out from Barrie to Aurora and vice-versa.

“GO Transit and UP Express customers should check their schedules before leaving home,” the transit agency said.

Dozens of crew members are going through training for GO Transit. Metrolinx expects they will be available to operate trains this fall, allowing for more service to be added at that time.

"As always, should there be delays that are unavoidable, Metrolinx will give their customers as much notice as possible."

Other lines impacted include weekday adjustments to the Lakeshore West and Richmond Hill lines.
