WATCH: 20 new schools to be built in 2020-21

Province says this will create nearly 1,600 new student learning spaces

Update:

Twenty new schools will be built with a $550 million investment from the provincial government, Education Minister Stephen Lecce says.

In today's press conference, Lecce stated the 20 new schools and eight permanent school additions will be build between 2020-21, creating nearly 1,600 new student learning spaces and 870 new licensed child care spaces.

School boards with successful projects will be notified by the Ministry of Education by Oct. 30.

Premier Doug Ford is slated to speak to media at 1:00 p.m. today.

The announcement comes just after the provincial government released recommendations for Halloween. Health officials urged that kids in COVID-19 hotspots not go trick-or-treating this year, and that families in Stage 3 communities exercise caution and maintain social distancing while celebrating Halloween.

Ford will be joined by Education Minister Stephen Lecce for today's announcement.
