Public Health Ontario has reported a record 4,812 new cases of COVID-19 today (April 16).
Today's report includes 3,151 recoveries and 25 new deaths.
The deaths reported today include two people between 40 and 59 years old, 13 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 10 people over the age of 79 years old.
The province has reported 203 new hospitalizations since yesterday, and 53 new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.
The April 16 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:
- 39,977 active cases, which is up from 38,341 yesterday.
- 1,955 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 1,932 reported yesterday.
- There are 701 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19 (up from 659 yesterday) and 480 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 442 reported yesterday)
- The province reported 64,304 tests were processed yesterday resulting in an 8.3 per cent positivity rate.
- Another 38,815 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 13.3 million tests have been completed.
- Of the 4,812 new cases reported today, 1,469 are from Toronto, 851 cases are from Peel, 491 are from York Region, and 101 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
- The new cases reported today include 831 individuals aged 19 and under, 1,890 people between 20 and 39 years old, 1,376 people between 40 and 59 years old, 616 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 94 people aged 80 and over.
Vaccines
- There were 115,634 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on April 15, which is up from 105,430 doses on April 14.
- As of 6 p.m. on April 15, the province reported 3,644,038 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
- In total, 341,933 people have been fully vaccinated.
Public Health Ontario has confirmed 408,383 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 360,742 recoveries and 7,664 deaths, of which 3,909 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.
The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 2,747.4 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.
The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 187.3 cases per 100,000 people, which is an increase of 31.1 per cent from last week (March 31 to April 6).

Further restrictions are expected to be announced later today. Premier Doug Ford is slated to make an announcement at 2:30 p.m. Village Media will live stream the announcement.
Simcoe-Muskoka
Yesterday, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported 132 new COVID cases in the region.
There are 875 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.
The health unit has reported 2,081 variant cases confirmed to date, with 443 of those cases still active.
Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 9,059 cases of COVID-19 with 7,650 of those cases recovered and 215 cases ending in death.
There are 39 people from Simcoe County and one person from Muskoka hospitalized with COVID-19.
The weekly incidence rate for Simcoe-Muskoka was 121 cases per 100,000 for the week of April 6-12, which is an increase of 38.9 per cent over the week of March 31 to April 6.
