As of Jan. 17, Simcoe County residents can now submit online requests to exchange their existing garbage and recycling carts for a smaller size.

The standard size delivered to property owners across Simcoe County in November were 120 litres for organics, 240 litre for garbage and 360 litres for recycling. Cart size exchanges include an option to swap the garbage cart for a 120-litre version, and the recycling cart for a 120 litre or a 240-litre option.

Deliveries will not begin until March 2022 and may take several weeks to complete.

Cart exchange requests will be processed for free until July 30, 2022. After that time, there will be a cost for exchanges of $50 per cart exchanged. Exchange is limited to once in a 12-month period for any property. Cart exchanges will continue to be free for new property owners.

Additional organics or recycling carts are also being offered to property owners who request them.

Only property owners can submit a request. Renters or tenants should contact the property owner to make this request on their behalf.

“The timeline for cart exchanges will depend on the volume of requests received,” noted the County of Simcoe in a release on their website posted on Monday. “We will not be able to provide a specific delivery date at the time of your request.”

When your delivery date is scheduled, residents will be notified via email or text, 24 to 48 hours in advance of the exchange to ensure residents have the old cart(s) empty and at curbside. Failure to have carts out during the timeline will result in a $50 per cart administration fee for any subsequent attempts.

“If you are exchanging more than one cart, please ensure all your cart exchanges are submitted at the same time,” notes the release.
