Stage 3 of Ontario’s re-opening has involved a cautious return to near-normal – including a “return to play” for kids, in day camps and minor sports.

Innisfil Community Church is offering Sports Day camps for kids from Kindergarten age up to Grade 6 during the month of August, at its Life Centre at 1571 Innisfil Beach Road - while taking all COVID-19 precautions.

The day camp will include outdoor sports and indoor activities, geared towards specific age group (Kindergarten, Grade 1-2, Grade 3-4, and Grade 5-6).

The number of kids in each age cohort is limited to eight, with two leaders per group, explained Family Ministries Pastor Andrew Hammond, and he promised, “We will ensure that all the guidelines set forth by the public health unit are followed.”

That includes daily screening of parents, kids and staff before they enter the buildings, contact tracing, and the cleaning and sanitizing of common surfaces.

Three one-week sessions are being offered. Due to the restrictions on cohort numbers, parents can sign their children up for only one session, at this time.

It’s been kind of a last-minute effort, noted Pastor Andy.

“Our camps are always based on our approval for Canada Summer Jobs (youth summer employment), which we normally get approved for in mid to lake April,” he said.

This year was different, due to COVID. “Our approval this year was within the first week-and-a-half of July, which didn’t give us much time,” he eplained. “We understand that times are uncertain, and projected goals and timelines change for the approval of such projects, but we are very blessed to have the ability to hire students to help run the camp this year.

“Our goal is always to assist the families in our community as best we can, and when we got approved, I knew that we had to do something rather than nothing.”

The camp will be offered Aug. 10-14, Aug. 17-21 and Aug. 24-28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. All three weeks will offer the same activities.

Cost is $90 per child per session, with a maximum fee of $180 per family (regardless of number of children enrolled).

So far, registrations are lagging behind normal levels.

“I am sure that parents are still concerned with sending their kids off to day camps and other programs,” said Pastor Andy. “With that said, we are working hard at maintaining all of the guidelines set before us for day camps.”
