Ward 5 Councillor Kenneth Fowler will let his son shave his head tonight as part of his fundraiser for Chai Lifeline Canada.

Innisfil Councillor Ken Fowler will be going bald – but it looks like he gets to keep the beard.

At the start of November, the councillor, inspired by Movember, launched a fundraiser of his own for Chai Lifeline Canada - an organization that provides support and programs for families of seriously ill patients, including those battling cancer.

Fowler vowed to shave his head if he raised $250 by November 30, and to let his nine-year-old son Gabe wield the shaver if he reached $500 in donations.

In last Wednesday’s meeting of Innisfil Council, he was asked, “When are you going to shave the beard?”

“When I raise $1,000,” Fowler replied, noting that it’s not something he's looking forward to.

“I’ve nurtured and grown this puppy for a decade,” he said of his beard. Fowler added that if the $1,000 target is reached, “it will be the first time you’ve ever seen me cry.”

The fundraiser wrapped up Nov. 30, and it looks like both the hair and beard will have to go.

But in the final hours of the fundraiser, donations reached $1,005.

“I can’t believe it,” said Fowler.

The beard goes.

“The date set is Tuesday night, 7 p.m. It’s being shaved to the scalp,” he said – and being streamed live on Facebook (click here).
