Town gearing up to begin work on Park Road Drainage Diversion Project

Construction fencing is up, and work is set to begin on a new drainage channel within Innisfil Beach Park

It was sunny and cold last Friday.

Despite plunging temperatures, and a chilly wind off Lake Simcoe, crews were out setting up construction fencing in Innisfil Beach Park, along the route of a new drainage channel planned as part of the Park Road Drainage improvement and diversion project.

The project will divert stormwater runoff that currently flows under 25 Sideroad and eventually enters the ditch on the south side of Park Road, contributing to flooding of properties in the area during periods of heavy rain and spring melt.

Instead of the intermittent creek that cuts through private property, the new channel and berm will divert the flow, create new wetland areas and wildlife habitat, and allow contaminants to settle out before the stormwater reaches Lake Simcoe.

The walkway into the park at Alderslea is closed to pedestrian traffic at this time, and until the work within Innisfil Beach Park is completed. The project will include the construction of a new pedestrian bridge over the channel, to provide access at Alderslea.

Construction was set to begin on Monday, but Mother Nature had other plans as a major snowstorm hit Southern Ontario.

"It's safe to say it will start this week," said a town spokesperson.
