Just two weeks after winning their first trophy in franchise history, the Simcoe County Rovers will play for another on Friday.
The men’s reserve team, led by coach Manny Corona, has been invincible all season, rocking a 12-0-0 record, and will now have an opportunity to add to the
Rovers trophy mantle when they play for the U21 championship at 8 p.m. tonight (Aug. 5) from the Ontario Soccer Centre.
Win or lose, it will mark the end of an impressive first season for the U21 squad, who have seen players go up and down to the Rovers first team all season long.
If that is not enough, many players have also gone on to play for NCAA and OUA schools.
The match comes off the heels of the women’s big club having their season end last week after suffering a 4-3 loss to FC London in the quarterfinals.
The loss marked the end of a successful first season for the Rovers, who not only secured a playoff spot in their inaugural season, but played for home-field advantage right until the last day of the season.
The ladies did not go down without a fight in the contest, getting two goals from Marlene Siwula, who was named to the Team of the Week for her efforts.
As for the men, they take on the 7-7-3 Woodbridge Strikers as they continue their push for the playoffs.
The men currently sit tied in third place in the League1 standings – with Pro Stars FC and North Toronto Nitros – and one point behind second-place Oakville.
With seven wins, two ties and only one loss in their final 10 games, the Rovers are playing their best soccer of the season and it could see them host a home playoff game if they manage to secure a top-four seed.
