Boat driver faces impaired charges after becoming stranded in Lake Simcoe: Police

Tickets were also issued for open alcohol, insufficient life jackets and not enough safety devices

The South Simcoe Police Service Marine Unit rescued a group of people stranded on their boat in Lake Simcoe.

On Monday, May 24, 2021, at approximately 9 p.m., Marine Unit officers responded to a report of seven people on a boat that had lost power at the mouth of Kempenfelt Bay off Big Bay Point in Innisfil. Marine One located the drifting vessel and towed it to safely to shore.

The operator was issued a three-day licence suspension after a Fail was registered on an Approved Screening Device test. Provincial offences notices were issued for open alcohol, insufficient life jackets and not enough safety devices.

May 22-28, 2021 is Safe Boating Awareness Week. South Simcoe Police Service wants to remind everyone to wear your life jacket, boat sober, plan your trip, check the weather, ensure you have life jackets for everyone on board and be aware of cold water risks. Let's make this a safe boating season.
