Woman arrested after leaving one month old baby locked in car

3:15 p.m. update from South Simcoe Police:
South Simcoe Police Service officers have charged a 40-year-old woman after a newborn baby was left alone in a hot vehicle in Innisfil.

On Friday, June 26, 2020 around 12:50 p.m., police were called to a plaza parking lot on Innisfil Beach Road in Alcona by citizens who located an unattended baby inside a locked vehicle. The one-month-old boy was crying and appeared to be in distress. The citizens broke a window and opened the door in order to rescue the child. County of Simcoe paramedics attended and transported the baby to a local hospital as a precaution.

A 40-year-old Innisfil woman was arrested at the scene and charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life. She was released with a future court date. Her name is not being released to protect the identity of the child.

South Simcoe Police Service officers are reminding people never to leave anyone unattended in a vehicle during hot summer weather. Temperatures inside a vehicle can quickly become much hotter than the temperature outside even if the windows are opened slightly. The situation could be deadly. The same caution applies to pets.

We would like to thank the citizens that rescued this baby, saving his life and averting a tragedy. These heroes will be recommended for civilian citations.
