The Seepe Walters Short Story Contest

In 2002, the Innisfil Library library was approached by Minky Archbell to sponsor a short story contest. The contest became an annual event and continues today, providing an opportunity for the community to recognize and celebrate literacy while sparking a joy of reading and writing in youth. The contest is open to all students in Grades 3-12.

In addition to other fundraising activities, the Innisfil Friends of the Library are proud to support this contest by fundraising throughout the year.

In 2004, as a way to honour her legacy, the contest became known as the Seepe Walters Short Story Contest. Seepe’s commitment to her community—and specifically her legacy to the library—is remembered through this contest.

In order to support not only the Seepe Walters Short Story Contest, which includes an Author Visit to all the local Innisfil schools encouraging and teaching the students to write stories, the Friends also support the community with programs for all ages, items that are otherwise not budgeted for, music for Jazz Festival, and much more.

The Friends of the Innisfil Public Library are very proud of the work they do and are grateful to be able to support the community.

Please help us support our Community.

The Innisfil Friends of the Library was founded in 1993 by Seepe Walters. Seepe was a well-respected and dedicated member of the Innisfil community until her death in 1995.

She was involved in many different facets of Innisfil life: the Historical Society, 4-H, the Women’s Institute, her church, her family, and various political arenas. Her love of writing and all things literary led her to journalism at the University of Toronto, a job as a freelance correspondent with the Daily Construction News, a job teaching English to immigrant children, work with the Barrie Literacy Council, and ultimately to helping found the Innisfil Friends of the Library.
