Health unit confirms 46 new COVID cases in Simcoe-Muskoka

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has confirmed 46 new cases in the region today, at least 41 of those are Simcoe County residents. 

There are 19 new cases in Barrie included in today's report. Among those cases are a boy and a girl under 18, four women and three men between 18 and 34 years old, a woman and two men between 35 and 44 years old, two women and four men between 45 and 64 years old, and a woman between 65 and 79 years old.

The last case is linked to close contact and one of the women between 18 and 34 has been linked to a congregate setting outbreak. The remaining 17 Barrie cases are still under investigation and a transmission source is pending. 

There are two new cases in Springwater, including a boy under 18 and a man between 35 and 44 years old. Both cases are under investigation.

There are three new cases in Bradford today, all under investigation. The new cases include a woman between 18 and 34 years old, a woman between 35 and 44 years old, and a man between 45 and 64 years old.

There are four new cases in Midland today, all are men and all are still under investigation. The cases include one man between 18 and 34 years old, two men between 35 and 44 years old, and a man between 65 and 79 years old. 

There are two new cases in Ramara today, both women and both under investigation. One is between 18 and 34 years old and the other is between 35 and 44 years old. 

There are also two new cases in Tay Township today, both are women between 18 and 34 years old and both cases are still under investigation. 

Among the 46 new cases reported today are five New Tecumseth residents, including one man between 18 and 34 years old, two women between 35 and 44 years old, and two women between 45 and 64 years old. One case is listed as community-acquired, and the rest are still under investigation. 

There are two cases in Essa, both men between 18 and 34 years old. The transmission source for both cases is under investigation. 

There are three cases listed in today's update without location information. They include a man between 35 and 44 years old, a woman between 45 and 64 years old and a woman between 65 and 79 years old. 

The two Muskoka cases included today are both Huntsville residents, one man and one woman, between 35 and 44 years old. 

There are active outbreaks Waterford Retirement Community in Barrie, Mill Creek Care Centre in Barrie, and at Georgian Bay General Hospital in Midland. 

Since yesterday, two people from the region have been hospitalized and 53 cases have been reported as recovered.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has now confirmed 2,462 cases of COVID-19 in the region with 2,047 of those cases recovered and 53 cases ending in death. There are 349 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Simcoe-Muskoka Region. Ten people from Simcoe County are hospitalized.

There have been 2,355 cases confirmed in just Simcoe County, with 1,952 of those now recovered and 52 ending in death. 

Locally, the cumulative incidence rate for Simcoe County is 446 cases per 100,000 people. The seven-day rolling average of new COVID-19 cases in the region was 55.2 as of December 5. According to the province's COVID-19 Response Framework, those regions with a seven-day average of 40 or higher could be placed under red zone restrictions.

Other indicators for the provincial framework suggest a region with a reproductive rate of 1.2 or higher and a per cent positivity rate of 2.5 per cent or higher. Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reports a reproductive rate of 1.6  and a 2.1 per cent positivity rate. 

The health unit has been maintaining its own colour-coded monitoring system not associated with the province's colour-coded restrictions. According to the health unit monitor, the region is in a red range. The province still has Simcoe-Muskoka under its orange level restrictions.

The reproductive rate shows how many others are infected by a person who has COVID, and the per cent positivity rate shows the percentage of people who test positive compared to the number of tests administered.
