Ontario reports 1,940 new COVID cases today

The province reported 23 deaths and 55 new hospitalizations today

Public Health Ontario has reported 1,940 new cases of COVID-19 today (Dec. 14).

The province reported 23 deaths in today's update, including one person between 40 and 59 years old, eight people between 60 and 79 years old, and 14 people over the age of 80. Of the deaths reported today, 11 were residents of long-term care homes.

Since yesterday's report, 55 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 and 13 COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units

The latest update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following: 

  • 1,525 new recoveries 
  • 857 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 813 yesterday
  • There are 244 COVID patients in intensive care units (down from 253 yesterday) and 149 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 142 yesterday)
  • Of the 1,940 cases reported today, 390 are from Peel, 544 are from Toronto, 191 are from York Region, and 33 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
  • 137 new school-related cases reported, there have been 6,356 school-related cases reported in Ontario to date
  • There are 18 schools currently closed because of COVID-19 cases, and all schools in the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit are currently closed for in-person learning
  • 16,586 current active cases in Ontario, which is up from 16,204 yesterday
  • Provincial public health labs have processed 57,091 tests since yesterday's report, which resulted in a 4.6 per cent positivity rate. This is the highest per cent positivity rate since Dec. 8. 
  • There is a backlog of 32,045 tests awaiting processing

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 142,121 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 121,563 recoveries and 3,972 deaths. 

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 956.1 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 88 cases per 100,000 people from Dec. 4 to Dec. 10, which is up from 83.2 cases per 100,000 people from Nov. 28 to Dec. 4.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit does not publish new confirmed cases on the weekends, and will deliver an update later this afternoon. 

The local health unit reported 339 cases of COVID-19 for the week beginning Dec. 6. There are 361 active cases in the region and 15 people from Simcoe County are hospitalized as of Friday.
