Outbreak declared at Barrie elementary school

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story has been edited from a previous version due to an error in reporting from the SCDSB. Two new school cases reported today are at Angus Morrison Elementary School in Angus.

One Barrie high school has been taken off the list of school outbreaks, while one Barrie elementary school has been added to the list.

Portage View Public School on Letitia Street in Barrie has been declared in outbreak by the health unit as of Dec. 4, however the outbreak was reported to the public as of Dec. 7. The school has three active cases that were previously reported, with one classroom closed.

An outbreak at St. Joan of Arc High School in Barrie has been declared over by the health unit as of Dec. 7.

There are currently six schools across Simcoe County declared in outbreak according to the health unit's reporting: Banting Memorial High School in Alliston, Nantyr Shores Secondary School in Innisfil, Steele Street Public School in Barrie, Bradford District High School in Bradford, Portage View Public School in Barrie and Nottawasaga Pines Secondary School in Angus. The health unit updates their outbreak list at 1 p.m. daily.

An outbreak at a school is defined by the local health unit as two or more lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in students and/or staff (or other visitors) with an epidemiological link (i.e. shared space or objects with each other), within a 14-day period, where at least one case could have contracted COVID-19 in the school (including transportation and before/after school care).

There are two new school cases reported today, at Angus Morrison Elementary School in Angus. No classrooms are closed as a result of these cases.

The schools all remain open.

The school boards and the health unit have not reported whether the individuals are students or staff members.
