Our public health-care system is often maligned for long wait times, understaffing and burned-out, stressed-out doctors and nurses.
Seven weeks ago, I had corrective surgery for an inguinal hernia at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie. I got lucky when the initial wait time was reduced from an expected nine months to three weeks because of some surgery cancellations.
On the day of my surgery, from check-in to waking up in the recovery room, I was impressed by how smoothly the entire process went.
The health-care workers with whom I came into contact — support staff, nurses, anesthesiologist, and surgeon — were cordial and competent; there was very little ‘down time’ when I was kept waiting.
The system that I saw was efficient and highly professional with no trace of the problems that we’re so used to hearing about.
