The following letter is in response to a letter regarding a campaign about addiction, published May 13.

I absolutely agree with Duncan McDonald and his letter on drug addiction and personal responsibility.

There is no such thing as a safe injection site. Do people not realize that alcoholism and drug addiction is a slow suicide? Encouraging your relatives and friends to continue such a lifestyle is beyond my comprehension.

I come from a long line of alcoholics and, at one point in my life, I could very well have joined my clan. However, sanity and personal responsibility prevailed. Yes, I suffered quite a few personal traumas growing up, but at a certain point, you become responsible for your own life and your personal choices.

I’m sure my name will be dragged through the mud for this, but addiction is a choice, and if you truly care for your loved ones, get them into rehab or let them go. If you let it happen, they will take you down with them.
