Flooding closes stretch of Belle Ewart road near Lake Simcoe

Heavy rain from the past couple days has caused an all-too-familiar site in Belle Ewart — flooding.

Heavy rain from the past couple days has caused an all-too-familiar site in Belle Ewart — flooding.

Town of Innisfil roads department crews closed a stretch of Maple Road, from Spooners Road to Belle Aire Beach Road, Friday morning while they deployed pumps and dealt with excess water in the area. A drive around the neighbourhood showed water had backed up on several streets, including Temple Avenue and Spruce and Balsam roads.

“We recognize Innisfil is challenged by flooding and our newly developed Stormwater Management Master Plan and Flooding Strategy will assist in developing solutions,” town operations director Nicole Bowman said.

Maple is temporarily closed until further notice.

Council approved the master plan and strategy in January, though exactly how they pay for their recommendations was left for future discussion. The report predicts a nearly $226.7-million price tag — roughly $12.6 million each year until 2041.

The Lake Simcoe Regional Conservation Authority requires its municipalities to have a master plan in place, but the document also helps address changes in regulations since 2016, as well as community growth and a re-prioritization of projects, as necessary.

For road updates, follow the town on social media. Residents can also report flooding concerns to the municipality's customer service team at 705-436-3710.
