Founder of Monto Reno Marina passes away at 95

The founder of Monto Reno Marina will be remembered fondly by the Innisfil and boating community

Doris Baxter-Forbes, founder of Monto Reno Marina in Lefroy passed away peacefully on Friday, April 16 at the age of 95. 

She had recently celebrated her 95th birthday in January, with a sign out front of her home, inviting residents to honk as they drove by. 

The Innisfil and boating community are saddened after hearing the news over the weekend, with of messages of condolences shared on the Monto Reno Marina Facebook page. 

"Ontario’s boating family has lost a legend. Doris gifted so many of us with that infectious laugh, her smile lit up every room and her love for her family was second to none. Our hearts, thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to Wilson and the entire family," read a comment from Boating Ontario. 

"Doris was beautiful inside and out. She will be missed by all Lake Simcoe Lovers," read another message from Mark Mandelbaum. 

Monto Reno Marina has been a pillar of the community since it its first channel was dug in 1963. 

She was also the Past Matron of Eastern Star, Stroud Chapter.

Over the years, features were added to enhance the resort area for boaters. A cottage was renovated to create a clubhouse with TV, games, a kitchen, showers and washrooms, and even a 'Captain Hook's Playground'. 

In 1985, a showroom, service shop, marine store and office were built at the marina. And in 2008, a new dock across the front of the property was installed. 

The total property has expanded to over 10 acres with 86 slips and 24 open seasonal slips.

They have earned certification as a Boating Ontario Clean Marine with a rating of five platinum anchor. 

Monto Reno Marina is a supporter of the Lake Simcoe Foundation and local minor sports groups. They have partnered in the completion and showcasing of the Emily May steamship model now displayed in Innisfil Town Hall.

Its success all thanks to Doris and the support of her family. She will be deeply missed by husband Wilson Forbes, children Heather (Laird) Hollingshead, Bonnie (Art) Enwright and Tracey Baxter-Goodwin as well as her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

A private family service will be held at Skwarchuk Funeral Home, Bradford followed by interment at Sixth Line Cemetery, Innisfil.

In her memory, donations may be made to Hospice Simcoe, Innisfil Food Bank or a charity of choice.
