The city’s six-week Hello Winter event, celebrating and embracing Barrie’s winter season, starts tonight with the enchanted winter trail at Sunnidale Park and ice sculptures at Meridian Place.
The enchanted winter trail features art installations inspired by Canada's natural environment, created in collaboration between Cobalt Connects and Ontario artist Tanis MacArthur. The trail also includes a winter lights display in the Sunnidale Arboretum.
The trail is groomed and snow-covered (weather-dependent); sleds and/or winter footwear are recommended, and snowshoes and/or cross-country skis are welcome. Strollers are not recommended. Parking is available at the Dorian Parker Centre at 227 Sunnidale Rd. The trail will be open nightly from 5-9 p.m. until Feb. 13, weather-permitting.
Residents and visitors are also encouraged to enjoy ice sculptures at Meridian Place over the weekend. The sculptures – a classic favourite from past Winterfests – are carved from 300-pound blocks of ice and will light up and reflect the theme of wildlife and the natural beauty of northern Canada.
Hello Winter offers fun, engaging and safe activities to enjoy and celebrate winter in Barrie. The event is funded in part by the Government of Ontario through the 2021 Reconnect Festival and Event Program.
While enjoying the ice sculptures, enchanted winter trail or other Hello Winter activities, the city reminds participants to follow all posted health and safety guidelines, and the regulations from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit and the Province of Ontario.
