Man facing multiple charges after Highway 11 crash: OPP

Highway 11 northbound lane was closed for several hours due to Halloween night crash; 34-year-old Orillia man is facing impaired, other charges

An Orillia man is facing charges in the wake of a three-vehicle crash on Halloween night.

At about 7 p.m. Tuesday night, Orillia OPP officers responded to a three-vehicle collision on Highway 11 North at Line 9 in Oro-Medonte Township.

"Officers attended the area and located lots of debris, vehicles blocking the highway and extensive guardrail damage," notes a media release.

As a result, one northbound lane of the highway was closed for several hours.

"Luckily, no injuries have been reported as a result of this collision," said the release.

During the investigation, officers spoke with a male driver who was allegedly displaying "numerous signs of alcohol consumption."

Alexander Broadhead, 34, is facing the following charges:

  • Operation while impaired- blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC)
  • Operation while impaired- alcohol section 320.14(1)(a) (CC)
  • Drive motor vehicle with cannabis readily available contrary to section 12(1) of the Cannabis Control Act
  • Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor contrary to section 42(1)(a) od the Liquor Licence Control Act
  • Drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit contrary to section 7(1)(a) of the Highway Traffic Act

"The Orillia OPP reminds motorists to plan ahead when consuming alcohol or drugs. Use a designated driver, cab, rideshare, public transit or stay overnight. Any amount of alcohol or drugs can impact your ability to make sound judgments. In a split second you could ruin your future, injure or kill others," notes the release.
