To meet the rapidly growing demand in Simcoe County, Alliston and District Humane Society (ADHS) launched the Second Chances: Shelter Expansion Capital Campaign to double the size of our shelter today.

As the region’s only no-kill shelter, we can only take in as many animals as we have space for and we have found ourselves in the incredibly difficult position of having to turn away animals in need. This goes against everything we stand for and it’s the reason why we need our community’s continued support to expand.

An unprecedented need: Skyrocketing numbers and a shelter that is bursting at the seams.

We see upwards of over a thousand dogs, cats and small animals coming through our door each year. Many of these animals are lost, surrendered or simply abandoned by their owners because they don’t have time for them, the financial resources to care for them or the animals may be displaying medical or behavioural issues.
    •    As of May 2023, dog intakes have soared 400 per cent over 2023. Cats come in to the shelter in a steady stream all year long and the calls never stop. We helped 400+ cats in 2022 and are well over that for 2023.
    •    We have more rabbits in foster home than we can house in the shelter.
    •    There are waiting lists for surrender intakes, and our foster homes are at maximum capacity.
    •    There is no end in sight to the rising number of animals that we are taking in and we can no longer offer our public education programs due to the fact that our public space/boardroom is full of animals requiring housing.

In total we need to raise $4 million dollars through this campaign. ADHS is thrilled to report that $1.5 million dollars has already been generously donated through a legacy gift. With the community’s support, we hope to raise the additional $2.5 million needed to build a major expansion and renovate our current facility, with construction beginning in 2024.

Jane Clarke, president, Alliston and District Humane Society, said: “Our building has served us well, but we outgrew it years ago and we need to grow for the future. Together, we can save animals’ lives. Please help us build a bigger, better and brighter shelter for the animals by supporting our capital campaign today!”
