TRAVEL: Celebrate the Easter long weekend at Deerhurst Resort

In this month's Ontario travel column, Bradford West Gwillimbury author Andrew Hind takes us to a place that has been 'perfecting the art of family vacations for 125 years'

Just as spring brings new life to nature, it provides us with fresh energy. When the days start getting longer and temperatures rise, it’s time to get out of the home, enjoy a brief getaway, and make some new memories.

There’s no place imbued with more warm-weather charm than Deerhurst Resort over the Easter long weekend.

Deerhurst Resort, in Huntsville, is one of Ontario’s oldest continually operating resorts. And one of its most beloved. Founded in 1896, it’s been perfecting the art of family vacations for 125 years and hosts a near-unequalled array of amenities.

Magical at any time of year, the melting of lake ice and warmer days that awaken the surrounding forests lend Deerhurst a special energy now that spring has arrived. To celebrate, the resort hosts a celebratory long weekend celebration.

Kids will have you running from one event to another — meet animals during the interactive Speaking of Wildlife presentation, have your face decorated with airbrush tattoos, and participate in scavenger hunts, daily campfires, family trivia, bingo, and maple syrup tastings (the resort taps trees to supply its own maple syrup needs).

Deerhurst hasn’t forgotten that it’s Easter. Holiday offerings include a Saturday Easter egg hunt, daily golden egg hunts — find that day’s golden egg to win an overnight stay, Easter-themed Arts and Crafts classes, and a fabulous Easter brunch.

And, of course, guests have the full range of seasonal amenities and activities to enjoy, including a large indoor pool, fitness classes, dining at three restaurants and late-night drinks at the atmospheric bar, a fitness room, the full-service Amba Spa, and hiking the forested hills just awakening from the long winter’s nap.

If you like music — and let’s be honest, who doesn’t? — then you’ll love the fact that Deerhurst hosts not one but three concerts over the course of the weekend.

Young ones will delight in the music of Splash’N Boots (March 30, 4 p.m.), a beloved Canadian children’s duo as seen on Disney Jr. Canada and Treehouse TV. Colorful and engaging, Splash’N Boots will be the highlight of your kids’ weekend.

That evening, Toronto-formed band Big Sugar hits the stage with their distinctive blend of heavy rock, reggae and bluesy tones. Showtime is 8 p.m.

On the evening of March 31, famed Canadian duo (and twin sisters) Tegan and Sara perform live. Over the past 25 years, they’ve have sold well over one million records, received numerous awards and nominations, and recorded an incredible catalogue of hits, including the pop juggernaut “Closer”.

Deerhurst celebrates the Easter long weekend and the arrival of spring in style. It’s like a gift basket to the entire family.
