As our 200th anniversary celebrations of the founding of Innisfil come to a close, the five remaining utility box wraps commemorating Innisfil’s Bicentennial have been completed. For a total of ten, these green and grey utility boxes are now commemorative landmarks highlighting rich and vibrant historical photos celebrating our town’s past for all to enjoy. These wrapped boxes are a way to both honour Innisfil’s past as well as creating a place-making feature in Innisfil neighbourhoods, a form of public art for all to enjoy and safely celebrate our Bicentennial. This is an opportunity for residents to discover Innisfil’s past, get outside and celebrate together in the community.
2021 Locations
- Alcona: 25th Sideroad and Joseph St. at crosswalk to Goodfellow
- Cookstown: Corner of King St. and Hwy. 89
- Gilford: Shore Acres Drive (By the TOI Paid Parking Lot)
- Lefroy: Lormel Gate off the 20th Sideroad
- Big Bay: Front of a property at 147 Big Bay Point Road
2020 Locations
- Alcona: Innisfil Beach Road in Across from the Library
- Alcona: Anna Maria Avenue at Ashwood (St. Francis of Assisi crosswalk)
- Cookstown: Queen Street across from the Post Office
- Sandycove: Lockhart Road in the Sandycove Mall parking lot
- Stroud: Corner of Victoria St. and Yonge St.
The bicentennial is an opportunity to share the vibrant story of Innisfil, its people and the history of life in this small rural town. The Town of Innisfil was officially surveyed in 1820, opening the way for settlers to set up their homes, and begin farming. Some of the first families in Innisfil included the Hewsons, Soules, Warnicas and Perrys. Residents are invited to learn more about our community’s rich history here.
Our Stories Innisfil is an ongoing, large-scale collaborative community-led history project, building and collecting the pieces of Innisfil`s history to share and preserve for everyone. From oral histories to photographs to documents, Our Stories Innisfil is a partnership project led by the Innisfil ideaLAB & Library and the Innisfil Historical Society. The digital historical content that you will find on the site has been shared with us through our numerous partners including the Innisfil Historical Society, the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library, the Town of Innisfil, and individual donations.
