Are you an active senior? Why not try out for the Summer Games?

'There is a camaraderie between participants. It’s a good opportunity to build friendships and travel to another community,' says local organizer
Marilyn Schriner and Larry Carter of Orillia were victorious in the women's and men's 65-plus 10-km bicycle time trial at the 2022 Ontario 55+ Summer Games.

Simcoe County is looking for its best senior athletes to compete in the Ontario 55+ Summer Games

The games will be held from Aug. 9 to 11 in Brantford. The event will bring seniors from across the province together to compete in pickleball, card games, golf, slo-pitch, swimming, darts, and more.

Local athletes can participate in the games by competing at local qualifying events this spring and early summer.

Larry Carter, the Simcoe County co-ordinator for the Games, encourages people turning 55 this year and older to participate, no matter what their skill level and experience.

“We have a number of people in Simcoe County already playing in tournaments and all we need to do is get them qualified,” he said. “They are playing at the Legion, Rotary Place, and even in senior living homes. We want to get these people to play in the Games.”

Carter, 66, says participants enjoy meeting and competing against fellow seniors from different communities who share the same passions for sports and staying active.

“There is a camaraderie between participants,” he said. “It’s a good opportunity to build friendships and travel to another community.”

The Park Street Collegiate Institute graduate says the goal of the provincial event is to keep local seniors active.

“Being active is a positive factor and influence on your health,” Carter said. “To live a long and happy life, we need to be healthy.”

Last year, 24 local athletes competed at the Games from the local area. Simcoe County seniors brought home three gold medals — one in pickleball and two in time trial cycling. One of those medals was won by Carter who competed in the men’s 65-plus 10-km bicycle time trial competition.
