HAMILTON – The Barrie Baycats sent 11 batters to the plate in the seventh inning and scored seven runs to beat Hamilton, 11-9, Tuesday night and eliminate the Cardinals in four games.
Two of Royce Ando’s four hits came in the seventh, the second of which drove in a run. Ryan Rijo went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, Hayden Jaco drove in two on a pair of hits, Carson Burns had three RBI, and Adam Odd singled twice and doubled.
Brad Grieveson picked up the win in relief, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits over 3.2 innings. He struck out three. Barrie starter Evan Soules was charged with four earned runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings. He walked one and fanned four.
For Hamilton, Luis Bernardo and Laine Renaud each had solo home runs. Brendon Daley went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Quin Cotton drove in a run on two hits, Tyler Duncan singled three times, scored twice and drove in a run. He also stole a base. Danny Berg added an RBI and Quin Cotton singled, doubled and drove in a run. Hamilton had its own seven-run inning in the sixth to briefly take the lead.
Rashil Bhat suffered the loss in relief, though only one of the four runs he allowed in the seventh inning was earned. Bhat scattered three hits and struck out one.
Corben Peters started and went two innings, giving up four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
Rain and lightning suspended the rest of Tuesday’s IBL playoff games. Toronto led Guelph 8-4 in the bottom of the fifth. No resumption date has been announced.
Kitchener, meanwhile, held a 2-0 advantage over London in the top of the sixth. That game will resume Wednesday at 7:45 p.m at Labatt Park. Game 5, if necessary, will now be played Thursday at Jack Couch Park at 7:30 p.m.
