Baycats edge Welland in opening game of IBL final

Teams play again tonight in Barrie in battle for Dominico Cup

WELLAND – Barrie opened the Dominico Cup final by taking Game 1 Saturday night in Welland.

Canice Ejoh went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in the Baycats’ 4-3 win. Ryan Rijo added an RBI, and Carson Burns scored the winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the top of the ninth. Starlin Rodriguez singled twice for the third-place squad.

Frank Garces went the distance on the mound, striking out 12 in a 144-pitch effort. He was charged with three runs on 12 hits with three walks.

For Welland, James Smibert went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Gianfranco Morello drove in a run on two hits and Steven Moretto added an RBI. Tyler Dupuis and Ethan Hunt each picked up a pair of hits.

Chris Boatto took the loss, giving up a run on two hits over an inning. He walked two and struck out two.

Alberto Guerrero started and allowed one earned run on six hits over seven frames. He struck out eight and didn’t issue a walk.
