Georgian rugby team claims OCAA gold after ‘really hot’ start

'The boys didn’t give up. I couldn’t be happier,' says Barrie's own James Robb-Kennedy, who was named game MVP

Home-field advantage means your hometown fans have your back and that's exactly what the Georgian Grizzlies men's rugby team had Sunday afternoon as they struck provincial gold.

The Grizzlies hosted, and won, the 2023 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) championship game against the Humber Hawks on Nov. 12.

The Grizzlies jumped out to an early lead and held on as their opponents surged during the second half.

Georgian went on to beat the Hawks, 26-10, at J.C. Massie Field in Barrie's north end.

Going into the championship match, Georgian had previously defeated Humber, 26-22, in the only regular-season game against each other this season.

The game’s MVP, Barrie native James Robb-Kennedy, insisted it was a team effort that propelled his squad to victory.

“I thought it was a strong game by the boys,” he said as he was lining up for a team photo after the big game.

“We started off really hot,” Robb-Kennedy added. “Humber brought the intensity. It was a really hard-fought game with lots of hard hits and tackles back and forth, but the boys didn’t give up.

"I couldn’t be happier.”
