A stabbing at Milligan's Pond last week has one man on the road to recovery and Barrie police searching for a suspect.

Police were called to the downtown-area park just before 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4 about a knife attack that occurred near Boys Street.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday they have confirmed the suspect's identity, but are not releasing his name yet.

“We know who it is we are looking for and are in the process of trying to locate that individual," Leon said. "He is of no fixed address and known to frequent the Barrie area, but is believed to be from the GTA.

"We do have a warrant out for him and we aren’t releasing too much information as we don’t want him to disappear. We do believe he is still in the area," Leon added.

Police are withholding the name as it is part of the ongoing investigation, but say the 33-year-old man is being sought on charges including aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and failure to comply with a probation order.

The 38-year-old man who was stabbed was taken to a local hospital and then flown to a Toronto trauma centre with serious injuries that were considered life-threatening at the time.

Leon said the incident began with some kind of disagreement that led to the initial assault.

“That eventually led to the stabbing taking place, where afterwards the suspect simply walked away and medical assistance was requested," he said.

"Although initially in serious condition, the victim is on the road to recovery is expected to survive," Leon added.

The suspect is described as a white male, standing five-foot-seven.
