In an unfortunate incident on April 6, 2024, a resident of Bradford fell victim to a different type of Marketplace scam.

The resident believed they were engaging in a legitimate face-to-face transaction for the sale of a phone on the Facebook Marketplace platform. The transaction took place in a public location, with the buyer appearing to send an email money transfer to the buyer. However, it was later discovered that the confirmation emails received by the seller from INTERAC were fakes, leading to the seller being scammed.

Protecting against email money transfer (EMT) scams:

To safeguard against similar scams, the South Simcoe Police Service (SSPS) advises the public to exercise caution when conducting online transactions. It's essential to verify the authenticity of emails and payment confirmations with your bank.

Additionally, individuals are encouraged to utilize safe exchange locations, such as your local police station parking lots in Innisfil or Bradford, for in-person transactions.
