BREAKING: Police at Innisfil scene for 'serious incident'

Special Investigations Unit called after incident on Somers Boulevard in Innisfil

Emergency crews are on the scene near Happy Vale Drive and 25th Sideroad in Innisfil tonight for what police are only calling a "serious incident."

At 10:49 p.m., Tuesday, South Simcoe police said the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate.

"As a result, the South Simcoe Police Service is unable to comment. All media inquiries should be directed to the SIU," the release said.

The SIU investigates cases involving police where there has been a death or serious injury.

The SIU could not be reached on Tuesday night for comment.

Retired South Simcoe police chief Andrew Fletcher posted on his Twitter account about an ongoing incident Tuesday night (Oct. 11). He urged people to await more details from local police, but added, "in the interim please pray for all those involved."

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon confirmed they are assisting South Simcoe police with an incident, but released no further details.

"There isn’t a lot of clarity of what transpired in Alcona tonight, but what is certain is our community needs prayer," says a post from the Innisfil Community Church posted on their Facebook page at around 10 p.m.

Barrie resident Michael Chorney, who is a freelance news photographer, is currently on the scene and says Somers Boulevard is closed.

This is a breaking news story and InnisfilToday will have more details as information becomes available.
