A vehicle sits on its side after colliding with a pole on Lakeshore Drive in Barrie near the Southshore Community Centre on Sunday night, Jan. 14.

A section of Lakeshore Drive in Barrie was closed Sunday night after a vehicle knocked down a pole before coming to rest on its side in the median.

The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Jan. 14 near the entrance to the Southshore Community Centre in Barrie.

The driver and two passengers were taken to local hospital, with no serious injuries reported.

A bystander following behind in their car called 911 and assisted the occupants of the vehicle.

“I saw one sitting on top of the car, so I went up to help him down; had him sit down (on the side of the road),” Chris, the driver who was a few vehicles behind, told BradfordToday and InnisfilToday at the scene.

“Police investigation revealed that the vehicle lost control due to slush and not black ice as other reports may be suggesting,” police communications coordinator Peter Leon said.

“(The) vehicle rolled and struck a street light pole,” he added.

When travelling in winter weather, Leon said drivers must drive according to the conditions they are experiencing, “and this means reducing their speed, increasing their distance between vehicles especially on roads that are slippery and icy.”

Giving additional time, not rushing, or simply staying at home and heading out when the weather improves is strongly recommended, he added.

“On a day like yesterday, where snow squalls are impacting the area, it is important to allow the plows a chance to safely do their job,” Leon said.
