Charges laid in fatal 2021 train/car crash in New Tecumseth

Two people died in crash on Nolan Road; arrest made Thursday with help from U.S. agency

Members of the Nottawasaga detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) with the assistance of the Nottawasaga Major Crime Unit have made an arrest and laid charges relating to a fatal collision investigation that claimed the lives of two people and seriously injured three others including the driver almost two years ago.

On Oct. 14, 2021, shortly after 11 p.m., Nottawasaga OPP and emergency services responded to a motor-vehicle collision involving a train and a passenger vehicle with five occupants on Nolan Road in the Township of New Tecumseth. One vehicle occupant was pronounced deceased at the scene. The remaining occupants were transported to hospital, where one succumbed to their injuries.

As a result of the investigation, on April 13, 2023, the driver of the passenger vehicle, Jarmanjeet Singh, 29 years of age, was arrested with assistance from United States Customs and Border Protection and charged with criminal negligence causing death (two counts), criminal negligence causing bodily harm (two counts), obstruct justice (two counts) and fail to give way to railway equipment at a road crossing (Railway Safety Act).

The accused has been held pending a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice.
