Fire destroys waterfront cottage; $1.5M in damage

Difficult access and topography of property made firefighting difficult for crews; investigation is ongoing but the fire is not considered suspicious

An overnight fire destroyed a lakefront cottage in Gravenhurst.

Fire crews were called to the blaze near Peninsula Road last night at around 9 p.m. When they arrived on scene, the home was "fully involved" with flames.

Due to the topography of the property and access issues, this blaze was "difficult for crews," officials said.

Water supply was established at Morrison Lake and from tanker shuttles. In total, seven fire apparatus and 30 firefighters fought the blaze at the height of the battle.

The home was a total loss, and damage is estimated at $1.5 million. The investigation is ongoing but not considered suspicious, officials say.
