An impaired driver was arrested after colliding with a downtown Barrie building and then fleeing the scene Sunday night.

At 11:13 p.m. on April 7, Barrie police received a report of a crash involving a vehicle which struck a business on Anne Street South, according to a news release.

Police say they were informed of the licence plate number, which was shared with the responding officers.

The vehicle was located a short distance away on Anne Street South near Essa Road, and police say officers observed the driver showing "obvious signs of impairment."

A 68-year-old Innisfil man was arrested and transported to police headquarters where the investigation continued.

Police say a breathalyzer test later determined the man had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system when the samples were obtained.

The man has been charged with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired, operation while impaired with a blood-alcohol concentration over .80 milligrams and failure to remain at the scene of a crash.

He is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on April 24.
