Almost 2,000 vehicles were stopped and 47 charges were laid by the South Simcoe Police Service during the latest Festive RIDE campaign.
The campaign, which ran from Nov. 24 to Dec. 31, saw police issue 97 approved screening device demands and 10 approved drug-screening equipment demands.
Police said 21 people, from 19 to 90 years old, were arrested and charged as a result of the RIDE programs and other impaired driving-related investigations. Police laid 47 criminal charges. Another 13 people, from 16 to 58 years old, had their licences suspended due to the presence of alcohol or drugs.
Thirteen of the 21 arrests were of those involved in collisions.
“It is disappointing that some people refuse to get the message about the dangers of impaired driving,” said Sgt. Jessica Irwin. “We will continue our year-round RIDE programs as part of our ongoing commitment to road safety. Thank you to the citizens who choose to drive sober and those who support our efforts by reporting suspected impaired drivers.”
