Ontario Provincial Police is urging caution on area roads with the arrival of wintry weather.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, with the OPP's Highway Safety Division, posted a short video to X (the social media platform formerly known as Twitter) around 5 p.m. on Wednesday (Nov. 8) showing some of the conditions out on the highways around the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Schmidt said ice pellets and freezing rain were coming down in his location.

"The roads are wet, they're slick," he said. "I've got ice accumulating on the hood of my vehicle."

The sergeant urged motorists to give themselves distance between vehicles in case of unexpected slowdowns.

And with it getting dark sooner, Schmidt also advised people to use their full head-lighting system.

"Be careful out there and get to where you're going safely," he said.

Schmidt said the conditions are expected to change to rain overnight, so the roads could be slippery.

"It's that time of year, so be ready for winter weather anytime," he added.
