Barrie police say a man was punched in the face after almost being struck by a vehicle Wednesday evening in a parking lot on Minet's Point Road.

Just before 5 p.m., May 3, officers responded to an incident that had just taken placed in a parking lot at 190 Minet’s Point Rd.

Upon arrival at the scene, police learned that the victim had just exited a business located in the plaza and as he was walking toward his parked car, another motor vehicle that was travelling in the parking lot nearly struck him.

Police say the driver, a 24-year-old Barrie man, "immediately exited his motor vehicle, approached the victim and, for no known reason, punched him in the nose."

Paramedics attended the scene and treated the victim, but hospitalization was not required.

Police continued to investigate the "unprovoked assault" and investigators were aided by video surveillance, "which captured the entire incident."

Shortly after 6 p.m., police located the suspect's vehicle travelling on a street in southeast Barrie and stopped it.

The driver was taken into custody and charged with one count of assault. He was later released and is scheduled to appear at the  Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie on June 7.
