Pedestrian suffers minor injuries falling into open manhole

Incident happened shortly before 7 p.m., near Ross and Mary streets; Police believe manhole cover may have come loose after being hit by snowplow

An uncovered manhole caused a bit of a scare and some minor injuries for a person walking in downtown Barrie Friday night after they fell into the opening.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m., Dec. 23, on Mary Street between Dunlop and Ross streets.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday the man involved sustained minor injuries and was able to call 911.

"The gentleman was a bit surprised, but was mostly unharmed, aside from some minor injuries," Leon said.

"We believe the manhole cover possibly came loose from being struck by a snowplow and this person didn't see it exposed due to the time of night and being dark," he added.

Barrie firefighters and Simcoe County paramedics tended to the man at the scene, Leon said.
