Police charge driver, 15, after vehicle turns to avoid RIDE check

Police say a 15-year-old driver was charged after attempting to avoid a Festive RIDE check on Friday.

According to South Simcoe police, at around 9:15 p.m. officers were conducting a RIDE check in the area of Marshview Boulevard and Morris Road in Bradford West Gwillimbury.

Officers observed a vehicle travelling eastbound do a U-turn to avoid the spot check, police said in a news release.

Police stopped the vehicle and discovered the driver was underage and did not possess a licence.

Following an investigation, a 15-year-old Bradford male was charged with driving a motor vehicle with no licence, and young driver — blood alcohol concentration above zero.

The vehicle was towed from the scene, police said.

In total, officers stopped more than 1,400 vehicles during Festive RIDE programs over the weekend, resulting in two impaired driving arrests.

On Friday at around 6:45 p.m., a RIDE check was set up at Line 5 and Coffey Road in Bradford West Gwillimbury, where police say they interacted with a male driver.

As a result of an investigation, Sarin Ty, 48, of Bradford was charged with operation while impaired, and operation while impaired/excess blood alcohol. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days.

Also on Friday at around 10:20 p.m., police were conducting a RIDE check on Innisfil Beach Road, near the 10th Sideroad in Innisfil, where police interacted with another male driver.

As a result of an investigation, Donald Hellier, 39, of Orillia was charged with operation while impaired/excess blood alcohol. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and both of the accused are considered innocent unless proven guilty.

In addition to the above charges, South Simcoe o​​​​​fficers also issued 21 approved screening device tests, one three-day warning suspension, and a number of Highway Traffic Act charges.
