Police say man accused of stealing a bike was caught riding it the next day

A 20-year-old Essa Township man faces possession of stolen property, obstruct peace officer charges, among others

TOWN OF NEW TECUMSETH, ADJALA-TOSORONTIO & ESSA TOWNSHIPS, ON - The Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid charges after a home owner reported his bike stolen from his garage in Angus, Essa Township.

 On Friday, June 5, 2020, at approximately 9:56 a.m., a home owner on Armeda Clow Crescent reported a bicycle stolen from the garage around 9:06 a.m. The property is equipped with video surveillance, and the home owner was able to provide police with the footage. Police checked the area but were unable to locate the bicycle or suspect.

 On Saturday, June 6, 2020, the same officer who had responded to the theft of bicycle from the day prior, was dispatched to a report of a suspicious person on Coulson Ave, Angus. The owner of the stolen bicycle had located the suspect and called police. Officers attended, arrested the male, and subsequent to arrest, located additional stolen property.

 As a result of the investigation, 20-year-old Branden Dier of Essa Township has been charged with:

  • Theft under $5,000, contrary to s.334(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC);
  • Possession break in instruments, contrary to s.351(1) CC;
  • Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000, contrary to s.354(1)(a) CC - 2 counts;
  • Obstruct peace officer, contrary to s.129(a) CC;
  • Fail to comply with probation order, contrary to s.733.1(1) CC; and
  • Failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court, contrary to s.145(5)(a) CC.

The accused was held pending a bail hearing.
