Police seek witnesses to fatal East Gwillimbury crash

Investigators with the York Regional Police Major Collision Investigation Unit are seeking witnesses following a fatal motor vehicle collision in the Town of East Gwillimbury.

On Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023 at 4:40 a.m., York Regional Police responded to reports of a vehicle on fire in a ditch on Davis Drive near Centre Street. Emergency services personnel located a Chevrolet sedan that was flipped over, resting against a hydro pole and engulfed in flames on the south side of Davis Drive. After the fire was extinguished, a lone occupant was found deceased inside the vehicle.

The deceased person has not yet been identified.

Davis Drive at this location is a two-lane roadway going east and west in a rural setting. Investigators believe the vehicle had been travelling westbound on Davis Drive before it crossed into the eastbound lane, where it struck an embankment, sustained heavy damage and caught fire.

Davis Drive is currently closed for traffic in both directions between Highway 48 and York-Durham Line for the investigation of this fatal collision.

Police are appealing to any witnesses who have not yet spoken with police, as well as anyone who may have dashcam or home security video recordings of the area around the time of the collision, to please contact investigators as soon as possible.
