Residents in a northeast Alliston neighbourhood can expect a heavier than normal police presence over the next few days.
Nottawasaga OPP remained on scene in the Kidd Crescent and John W Taylor Avenue area for most of Feb. 27, for an investigation involving its Major Crime Unit. While its initial probe has wrapped up and there is “no threat to public safety,” police will continue to be in the neighbourhood over the coming days, the OPP's Central Region Communications branch said in a social-media post Tuesday night.
Yesterday’s incident began when officers attempted to pull over a vehicle around 3 a.m. The driver failed to stop and fled from police.
In the interest of public safety, officers did not pursue the vehicle. However, they were able to locate it a short time later.
As a result, three people were taken into custody and a stolen vehicle was recovered.
“Investigators do not consider this to be a random incident,” Sgt. Terri-Ann Pencarinha said in a news release. “The OPP reminds all members of the public to be aware of their surroundings and personal safety at all times and to call the police to report any suspicious activity.”
OPP were also called to Kidd Crescent for a shooting on Thursday, Feb. 22 that left one person in stable condition. The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries following a shooting involving three male suspects who were wearing dark clothing and masks. They were last seen leaving the area in a white Toyota Camry, police said at the time.
It's unclear whether yesterday’s pursuit and the shooting investigation are linked.
An OPP spokesperson declined to say, when asked, whether charges had been laid against the people in custody.
