Barrie police responded to a robbery on Alliance Boulevard around 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023.

The Ontario Educational Credit Union in Barrie was the scene of an armed robbery this morning.

City police responded to a call at 48 Alliance Blvd., near Highway 400 and Duckworth Street, just after 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9.

There were two people working in the credit union at the time, according to police.

“They complied with the demands of the individuals that are responsible for this robbery,” Barrie police communications coordinator Peter Leon told BradfordToday and InnisfilToday.

“I can’t confirm the exact amount," he added. "I can say that a significant amount of Canadian currency was obtained as a result of the robbery."

County of Simcoe paramedics also attended the scene, Leon said, but no serious injuries were reported.

Leon said police are in the process of looking at video seized from the immediate area and are hopeful that it could assist with the ongoing investigation.

“There are two suspects that are responsible for the armed robbery,” he said. “They were seen entering and exiting (the credit union). They were armed with weapons, but I won’t speak specifically to what weapons at this time. But they did have weapons.”

Leon said police expect to have more details of the armed robbery on Friday.

According to the credit union website, it is open to all active or retired educational employees and their families throughout the province. Its head office is located in Mississauga, but it also operates a branch in Barrie.
